Series I’d like to consume

October 21, 2014 Randomz 26

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish where people who love lists and books can share their favorites based on a certain topic each week.

This week’s topic is “new” series I’d like to start.

I’ll be honest. I am a series addict. It probably goes hand in hand with being a fantasy addict too. There are many series out there that I have heard great things about. I just have to finish the ones I’m currently working on. O_o Here’s a list of the top series I want to read, not just ones that are new.

Tammy Blackwell’s Timber Wolves and Shifters & Seers trilogies

I’ve just heard good things about Shifters & Seers, which is a spin-off of the Timber Wolves trilogy. So, of course I need to read both to get a full picture of that universe! Random fact: our professional basketball team in Minnesota is called the Timberwolves.

Karina Sumner-Smith’s Tower Trilogy

20344702Author posts do work. Recently, Sumner-Smith posted on Not Yet Read about the lack of proper female friendships in fantasy and scifi. Well, I agree with that assessment and now I also want to read her book.

All other series by Juliet Marillier

I am currently in the middle of the Sevenwaters series by Marillier. I AM IN LOVE. I actually went out and bought the next three books in the series, which I pretty much never do. I have decided to give all of her other series a go.

Chris Willrich’s Gaunt and Bone trilogy

17288770Apparently fantasy and literary fiction’s love child, this series boats beautiful writing and a committed couple as the MCs. I’m very intrigued.

Alexandra Bracken’s The Darkest Minds series

This is a series I have heard a lot of good things about. All I know is kids with powers and it is incredibly fast paced, but that’s enough.

Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series

13519397Another series that seems to get endless praise. I want to jump on this bandwagon! There also seems to be an endless amount of novellas with this, which sounds tiring.

Marie Brennan’s Memoir by Lady Trent series

12974372Dragons! Also, this is penned as a memoir, which seems like a really creative take on a piece of ficition about DRAGONS! I’m mostly excited about dragons.

Jacqueline Carey’s Moirin Trilogy

5659537I adore Carey’s Kushiel’s Legacy series, six books that take place in the same world as this trilogy (all part of the Kushiel’s Universe series). It is another set of books that I own, but I haven’t made an effort to read any more of Carey’s books. I need to fix this.

Rachel Bach’s Paradox series

Fortune's PawnThis just seems like a bad-ass scifi series. The MC is a merc. How sweet? I almost bought this, but decided that I was purchasing too many books (I was buying the rest of the Sevenwaters series! ;)). I may try to borrow this from the library first.

Scott Lynch’s Gentlemen Bastard

127455The sad thing is that I have this on my kindle and just haven’t started it yet! And for some reason, despite coming out in 2006, this series seems to be popping up on blogs lately. Maybe because book three came out last year? Regardless, the reviews are really positive!

Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn Trilogy

6547258The reason I have not started this yet is because I want to own it, and I particularly want the cover set above. I love the design of this. I would have to buy it online though, and it is kind of expensive for the entire set. I will though. I want.

As you can see, I have listed more than 10 series. I have many more in mind that I want to read too, I just can’t get enough. This is probably one of my favorite TTT topics in a long time.

Do you want to read any of these series? Have you read any of them? And are you obsessed with series like I am?

OKAY YOU NEED TO GET ONTO THRONE OF GLASS ASAP. I’M EXCITED AND YELLING WHICH I’M SORRYNOTSORRY FOR. OMG. IT IS MY FAVOURITE. And don’t panic about the novellas! There’s only 4, but they’re all in the prequel which is The Assassin’s Blade. Kind of just treat it as a prequel novel, not novellas. Honest. *ahem* ANYWAY. Enthusiasm will be on mute. ;-) I also have The Darkest Minds on my list. I’m kind of surprised I haven’t even tried to read them yet! It sounds so good!

Between you and Allie, I have been thoroughly and properly shamed into requesting Throne of Glass immediately on my library app. So well done both of you. :) And good to know about the novellas. I was just thinking about having to find a way to get my hands on all of them…

  2. Dragana

I agree, being a fantasy addict goes hand in hand with series. Standalone fantasy novels are so rare…
Radiant is on my list too. And I have read only three first books from Kushiel’s Universe series. It’s not on my list today but it is on my tbr.
I have read ‘Throne of Glass’ and it gets better with each book. I didn’t read any of the novellas though. o:)
And you must read Mistborn! It’s awesome!

I would love a fantastic fantasy standalone too! I think the next three books in the Kushiel’s Universe are good, but not as great as with Phaedre’s story. But, she and Joscelin are still part of the book, just as secondary characters.

I am in love with the bottom half of your list. I think Lies of Locke Lomora is one of the best fantasy debuts I have ever read, Willrich’s series is one of my favorite ongoing right now, and Rachael Bach’s trilogy was pure win. I liked Mistborn well enough as well, though I am not as in love with Sanderson’s stuff as most the web is.

    • Anne

Good to hear about Gaunt & Bone — I have not seen a lot of reviews, but it sounds so interesting! And I haven’t done any Sanderson, so we’ll see if I start fangirling over it like everyone else does!

I’m starting Throne of Glass tonight. I really hope that it lives up to all of the hype surrounding it. I’ll be scared to review it otherwise! Great list.

  5. Megan

Ahhh, it’s been so long since I last visited your blog, Anne, but I’m loving the new look around here — especially the header! I love how you put your favorite books (I’m guessing those are your favorites? :D) in between typewriters. It’s so cute! Anyway, on to your post: bahaha, I’m totally a series addict as well, only I have the ultra bad habit of starting a series and not finishing it. And for some reason, I’m fine with that. O_O

    3. Shadowfell – Haven’t heard too much about this book, but what little reviews I’ve seen for it have been pretty promising so far! Hope you do get to check out this series soon because I can’t wait to see what you think. :)

    5. The Darkest Minds – One of the other reasons why this is on my list is because I have absolutely no idea what to expect, too. I mean, I have an idea of what it’s about, but unlike other books, I can’t really tell where the story will be going, if I’m making sense. Here’s hoping that it’ll live up to our expectations when we do get around to it!

    6. Throne of Glass – I’ve only read the first book, but it was really good! Not the best fantasy book I’ve read, of course, but still enjoyable. Apparently the sequels are loads better, though, so I need to get to them ASAP as well. Oh, and the novellas have been bunched together into another book (called The Assassin’s Blade, I think), so that makes them easier to read. :D

    7. A Natural History of Dragons – Oh my goooosh that cover is AMAZING. I know it looks like a history book or something boring, but I love it! Probably ’cause it has a dragon on the cover, though. xD But yup, I think it’s such a cool way of writing a memoir, and WITH DRAGONS! Dragons make everything better, tbh.

    10. Mistborn – It’s about time I jumped onto the Brandon Sanderson bandwagon as well. And I agree, the design for the cover you chose is gorgeous. I hope you get to buy it soon because all I’ve been hearing for Sanderson’s Mistborn series is positive stuff. And also, it managed to get a previously non-bookworm into reading, which is really impressive.

I had to control myself to get the list firmly at ten, too. ;)

    • Anne

Thanks for the nice words! I give full credit to my co-blogger Ashley, that header is all her! And yes, the titles are some of her and my favorite books.

I haven’t heard much about Shadowfell either, but Marillier is on my auto-read list now!! And I think that the Darkest Minds being really a surprise is such a good thing. I usually hear a lot of details before I go in to a series, but this will be fresh! And wow about Mistborn, I’ll have to try it on my husband once I get it!

  6. Stephanie

I am also quite addicted to series but don’t keep up with what’s new so didn’t feel like I had enough fodder for this weeks TTT. I have much love for the Paradox and the Locke Lamora series! They are both really fantastic. I just read the second in the Juliet Marillier’s Wildwood series (Cybele’s Secret – it was okay) and just a warning that when I was snooping around about it, the author said the publishers will not continue that series beyond book 2. I also want to get into the Lady Trent series and you have now intrigued me about the Gaunt and Bone and Tower Trilogy which I hadn’t heard of! Yay Series!

    • Anne

I’m not sure that all of these are new, but most are. There are probably a million older series that I haven’t read but should! And I heard that about the Wildwood series. That is unsatisfying to know she had more in mind but they aren’t going to go with it. :(

  7. Mel@thedailyprophecy

You have no idea how happy this post makes me, but JULIET MARILLIER. She is one of my favorite authors and I feel she isn’t valued enough in the blogging community. Her Seven Water series is amazing, especially the first three books. Next up I love Wildwood dancing and Heart’s blood <3 I have yet to read Shadowfell & The dark mirror, I'm trying to savor her books. I'm so freaking excited for her upcoming Dreamer's pool.

Throne of glass made me dance a little as well. Celaena is my girl <3 and I'm a firm Chaol lover, but she introduces so many awesome (male) characters, you fall in love with everyone!

  8. Valerie

ALONG WITH THE USUAL Throne of Glass and Mistborn that EVERYONE LOVES, I also want to read The Natural History of Dragons (that’s a series???), because it sounds really cool. Like how to Train your Dragon, but non-fiction-y? But then it’s fiction because dragons? I’m not sure!

  9. Tabitha (Not Yet Read)

I’ve read or am reading four of those (still in the middle of the Marie Brennan first book) and they all look like excellent choices – Going to have to add the other ones to my list since we are totally in sync!!
