Beer & Book Exchange: October 2015

October 30, 2015 Books 12

Ashley lives in New York, Anne Minnesota. Each month we send each other one care package in the mail: a book plus a beer to match. The Beer & Book Exchange is a fun way for us to keep connecting over books (not that we need the help). Plus, who doesn’t love getting packages?!

Ashley’s Beer & Book

2015-10-05 20.39.55

Book: This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
Beer: Cygnus X-1 PorterFlat Earth Brewing Co.

Why Anne shipped it:
I went a little crazy with this box! I wanted to do a really strong theme, and started with the book because the cover is pretty gorgeous and I know Ashley liked These Broken Stars. The Leeloo was somewhat unintentional — I bought her for myself, but when she came in the same box as the book, well she matched so well! And, I knew Ashley would love her.

As for the beer, Cygnus is a really good stout from a local brewery I LOVE. I was pretty confident in this pairing, and you can’t beat the thematic resonance.

Ashley’s reaction:
I knew Anne was up to something because she kept sending me excitable cisco and text messages, just waiting for me to tell her I received my box. And, it was definitely a surprise! So, I love The Fifth Element…like a lot. Leeloo is the bomb! Anne gets a 5/5 for effort on this one. The beer was perfectly in sync with the sci-fi book, which I’m super excited to read! The Starbound series is actually one of my new favorites and I’ve been waiting to get my hands on the sequel. So, when I saw Leeloo’s bright orange hair staring me in the face, I definitely squealed a few times.

Plus, the beer was sooooooo good!

Anne’s Beer & Book

Book:You’re Never Weird on the Internet (almost) by Felicia Day
Beer: Ginormous Imperial IPA | Gigantic Brewing Company

Why Ashley shipped it:
Anne and I went to BEA this past year, and I know she was super bummed when the release of Felicia Day’s book wasn’t actually a release…more like the release of a few chapters. Although she was rockin’ this super cool dinosaur necklace which has been popping up everywhere in Brooklyn. Anyways, I was really excited to see this on Anne’s list and knew she’d enjoy reading about another fellow nerd. I had the damnedest time finding an equally nerdy beer. There are tons of wine and liquor stores nearby, but my only option for beer is Whole Foods. I did my best with an Optimus Prime looking one, and made sure it wasn’t a sour. Read the reason why here.

Anne’s reaction:
I am so excited to read this! Ashley heard me bemoan the fact that they were only giving away excerpts at BEA. I did not want to stand in line for a few chapters, but walked by later to peek at Ms Day. She is awesome, and I can’t wait to read this book!

I know Ashley didn’t think the beer matched at first, but I contest that it does. It is totally internet geeky — it has a robot on it! I am looking forward to drinking it, I really do love IPAs.

Totally adorable and so freaking awesome!

Okay that’s all I really had to say, haha. I just had to say, because it’s that cool an exchange to do! ;)

I was telling Ashley that if she couldn’t find a beer that matched, any kind of drink or really, food item, would do! And I need to get to the Felicia Day book asap!

Oooo GINORMOUS Imperial IPA! I’m not much of an IPA person, but it sounds interesting! And this is the first time I’ve heard about that book by Felicia Day, probably because I don’t pay attention to nonfiction much. And because I am NEVER weird on the internet. Ever. Haha

THIS SHATTERED WORLD IS AMAZING! I have never heard of the beer that went along it though! MUST BE GOOD :)

    • Anne

Well the beer doesn’t really go along with it, but it matches well because it is named after a galaxy!

And I don’t know if I can really relate to being weird on the internet either. :P

AWww it’s so lovely that you guys exchanged beer and books, such a fun and creative idea! I really do want to read the Felicia Day book, that would have been disappointing if you were looking forward to the launch. This Shattered World is definitely one of my favourites though!

It was just neat to see her in person! I really need to read her book and rewatch The Guild!
